When I was healing, I received some excellent advice from a man who had achieved his full recovery.  Im happy to pass it along to you:

A self-help group can be very helpful, but when you go to the first meeting, observe what goes on.  If people are commiserating together and focusing on their symptoms and suffering, don't go back.  If people are focusing on their successes however small the steps might be and talking about healing and recovery, then this is the group for you!
